Royal Air Force Boulmer was originally an Operational Training Unit when it opened in 1943.  Today it is home to the School of Fighter Control and is one of the Control and Reporting Centres in the United Kingdom’s Air Surveillance And Control System.  The station is also home to Headquarters and "A" Flight of 202 Squadron with 2 Sea King HAR3’s providing search and rescue and mountain rescue cover to the Borders. 

The Station historically occupied 8 separate sites near Boulmer Village in Northumberland.  Of these, 7 were “domestic” sites and 1 was the highly secure, underground control centre. 

The project team’s task was to master plan the consolidation of domestic facilities from 7 sites into 2.  It was imperative that the operational status of the station for both ASACS and Search and Rescue was not compromised. 

Martin Stevens was responsible for compiling the redevelopment strategy and developing the stage by stage implementation plan (which also had to pay regard to maintaining the resilience of group heating and services distribution to all proposed and existing buildings) and for creating “shuttle space” for the temporary relocation of some activities whilst new accommodation was built.  Additionally he researched and wrote the development briefs for the first phase of construction works valued at more than £10 million.
